Here’s an idea that should have been developed a long time ago.
Let’s engage the Royal Navy to safely intercept illegal boat crossings in the English Channel and transfer migrants to secure accommodation centres located away from populated areas. These centres would replace the current over-reliance on costly hotel housing and support faster asylum processing.
Illegal crossings via small boats continue at significant levels. The current response—placing migrants in hotels at public expense—creates excessive financial burdens, legal delays, and social tension. There’s also an increasing perception that the UK has lost operational control of its maritime borders.
Royal Navy Support: Deploy the Royal Navy in a humanitarian and logistical role to intercept boats and transfer migrants safely to shore.
Remote Secure Accommodation: Establish holding centres in remote or repurposed MOD facilities where individuals can be housed securely and humanely while their asylum claims are processed.
Fast-Track Asylum Decisions: Streamline the claims process to reach decisions within 10–30 days, minimizing prolonged uncertainty and cost.
Removal or Integration:
>>> Rejected applicants to be returned or relocated via international agreements.
>>> Accepted applicants to enter structured, monitored resettlement programmes — not open hotel accommodation.
>>> Reduces hotel and welfare costs.
>>> Increases public confidence in the system.
>>> Deters illegal crossings by ensuring prompt and predictable outcomes.
>>> Ensures safety at sea while restoring operational control.
