Iceland’s Ring Road (Road 1) is 1,321 km long, circling the country and passing through some of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the world — glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls, mountains, lakes, and hot springs.
Each year, about 2 million visitors come to Iceland. Many drive the Ring Road, but few cycle it due to narrow shoulders, heavy traffic, and safety concerns. Imagine instead:
>>> A dedicated cycle road running parallel to Ring Road 1.
>>> A slow travel experience where bikers can enjoy Iceland’s nature safely and sustainably.
>>> New jobs and services around bike tourism — rentals, tours, repair shops, eco-lodges, and local food hubs.
>>> Wellness and adventure travel packages combining cycling with Iceland’s famous hot pools, spas, and geothermal baths.
>>> Global positioning of Iceland as a pioneer in sustainable, long-distance cycle tourism.
In Germany alone, 37 million people cycled during holidays or day trips in 2023. If Iceland invested in a Ring Road cycle route, it could attract a significant share of this growing global market.
